Permaculture

Permaculture is a design framework guided by the natural world. When we apply nature’s genius to human systems, they inevitably become more efficient, creative, resilient, and beautiful, while simultaneously reuniting our civilization with the planet responsible for our every breath. As the health of these systems grow, so too does all life.

Ecosystems and Business

The following 6 ecosystem principles were identified by Boston Consultancy Group in collaboration with Simon Levin, professor of Biology, Princeton.  In both nature and business, these principles collectively result in robust and enduring health.

Redundancy

Elements in nature play overlapping roles, each fulfilling multiple needs, and each need fulfilled by multiple elements. This means when one element fails, another can replace it.

Diversity

Variety in nature means more resources, and more ways in which energy is used before it leaves the system. Diversity among elements and their connections buffers against environmental change, and is the reservoir for adaptation.

Modularity

Though there is overall interconnectedness in nature, everywhere there are subsystems and functional groups. Modularity slows the spread of  shocks between components, making the overall system more robust.

Adaptation

Systems pull on their reservoir of diversity to adjust and respond to change.

Prudence/Feedback

It's through feedback loops that systems detect environmental changes, and select for adaptation.

Embeddedness

From the rhizosphere of a single plant to large biospheres, ecosystems big and small are nested in their larger systems, allowing for the system's evolution through interaction, emergence, and feedback.
"The central environmental challenge of our time is embodied in the Staggering losses, both recent and projected, of biological diversity at all levels, from the smallest organisms to charismatic large animals and towering trees. Largely through the actions of humans, populations of animals and plants are declining and disappearing at unprecedented rates; these losses endanger our way of life and, indeed, our very existence. Biodiversity loss provides immediate evidence of environmental change, and it also threatens the very structural and functional Integrity of the Earth's Systems, and ultimately the survival of humanity" - Simon Levin, Moffett Professor of Biology, Princeton

Preference Falsification

The tendency for people to misrepresent their opinions, believing their peers wouldn't agree.

Variable Thresholds for Action

Some people need no support to act, some need to see at least one other person, others two, three, etc.

Group Polarisation

Groups of likeminded individuals are more prone to extremes than groups with diverse opinions

How Change Happens

According to Cass Sunstein, social cascades throughout history share three social phenomena

Community Investment

Direct Public Offering

A Direct Public Offering is a method by which entrepreneurs can offer investment opportunities directly to the community. Opening up investment to the community will lead to a locally-owned, robust economy, keeping more of every dollar in local circulation, and paving the way for more community-owned businesses in the years to come, and the formation of a Community Investment Fund.
